Prologue of Echoes of Liberty

The air off the harbor, bit through wool and bone alike, carrying with it the briny scent of seasalt and the sharper metallic tang of tension. It was March in Boston, a season when the cold seemed to crystallize the growing fury of the populace. Rose Duncomb stood at the edge of the cobblestones, fortified against the harsh weather in a heavy, fur trimmed cloak. Beneath the thick garment, a hand-knitted wool shawl offered a vital layer of varmth. Pinned tightly at her collar by a brass blanket pin worn to a smooth patina by years of utility. A sturdy round block wool hat protected her from the biting wind while her hands sought the practical refuge of a varm fur muff. Her well-worn attire revealed a woman of limited means , but the meticulous condition of her practical winter wear spoke to an immense resourcefulness grounding her firmly in the reality of the brewing storm.

In the din light of the lanterns, shadows danced erratically across the faces of townsfolk. At the forefront of the restless crowd stood Crispus, a towering figure of defiance against the armed sentries. He wore a heavy woolen frock coat with a short collar turned up against the chill, his stance wild and unyielding in brown wool breeches and trimmed wool stockings. The polished brass if his buckle shoes caught the faint light of the lantern light just moments before the shooting reached a fever pitch.

It was here, amidst the sudden deafening crack of musket fire. That Rose quiet life on the island fractured. Through the chaotic haze of gunsmoke, she saw Cyrus. Caught in the open a British musket leveled of pure devotion. Crispus lunched forward stepping directly into the parh of the fatal lead to protect his older brother. The physical force of the impact was devastating. The momentum of Crispus falling body knocking Cyrus backwards onto snow-covered cobblestone.

Panic erupted around them. Acting on pure instinct, Rose rushed into the fray. Grabbing Cyrus by his heavy woolen coat. Dragging his stunned wounded body toward the harbor’s edge were her small skiff lay hidden. The boat was barely large enough for two, let alone three. As she reached for Crispus the fallen hero shook his head, blood staining the prestine snow beneath him. With his final ragged breaths Crispus refused to be moved. Insisting with fierce finality that Rose only bring Cyrus to safety. It was an emotional devastating sacrifice, one that would resonate far beyond King Street. Weaving itself into the very fabric of her heart and the uncertain future of her affection.
